About 20 years ago, Robert Slagel was at a crossroads in his career. After successfully working for American Electric Power (AEP) and then with the Corp of Engineers, he had the opportunity to find a new company or go back home and help his father run the family business – renting out portable toilets. 

“A new company had its benefits,” said Slagel, owner of Industrial Sanitation, DBA Johnny on the Spot. “I knew I would probably make more money up front, but by this point in my life I was ready to settle down and work in the Tri-State Area where I had a lot of friends and family. I chose the family business also because I just felt like it was a good move. I'd made a lot of contacts within the power plants working for AEP and with the Corp of Engineers in Huntington. That alongside the never-ending ‘call of nature’ just about guarantees a steady stream – no pun intended – of business."

With an ongoing boom in construction at power plants, refineries, and the residential sector, portable toilet companies in the Tri-State were scrambling to keep up with demand and there was definitely room for growth. However, construction in the Tri-State has seen some darker days since then. After the housing bubble burst and what many call The Great Recession occurred, construction projects at a lot of power plants were put on hold or just canceled altogether. This slowdown also affected the residential and commercial construction markets, which in turn affected the portable toilet business. Slagel noted that the construction industry is the main user of portable toilets, not just in the Tri-State, but also around the world, saying “When construction slows down our business slows down.”

A couple of years ago, a contract for performing bulk pumping at a major refinery in the area came up for bid and Johnny on the Spot was the lowest bidder. By locking in on multi-year partnership with a major producer of refined gases (and one of the largest employers in the Tri-State) Johnny on the Spot was able to generate additional revenues and purchase a new pump truck dedicated solely for use at the refinery. Regarding the refinery contract Slagel says, "It was – and still is – a great opportunity for us and we're excited to be working in the refinery not only because of the business itself, but also because of the exposure it affords us. Hundreds of workers see Johnny on the Spot in that refinery every day – and those same workers may be on another job in a few weeks or months and will be able to recommend us on those jobs as well. It really is a win-win.”

The country continues to add new jobs and work its way out of the recession, as does the Tri-State. “Last year was a great year for us,” he said. “Construction has been picking up at a lot of plants in the area and we've been sending out more than just portable toilets. We’ve also been sending our climate-controlled, ground level, running water restrooms, known as ‘Sanitation Stations,’ to a number of locations in the area. If things keep up we will probably add some additional units next year.”

"They're great for areas with a high concentration of workers and they’re significantly more comfortable than your standard porta-potty when it's 90 degrees out in the summer or 20 degrees in the winter."

At Johnny on the Spot we start our days early – at 6 a.m. – when it's still dark outside and few cars are out on the roads. By 10:00 a.m. our day is half over, and we've gotten more done that many will do in all the rest of the day. That pot of coffee is gone and the rubber of our truck tires is hot. Johnny on the Spot (JOTS) is in the process of retrofitting existing Sanitation Stations for customers in the construction industry. The Sanitation Station is a containerized, portable running water restroom that can be deployed to major industrial and commercial construction sites around the Ohio River Valley. These self contained restroom units provide workers on major construction projects the facilities to use a running water restroom with flushable toilets, urinals, and sinks.
